Niqel operates the first industrial, fully mechanised, Jatropha oil mill in the world. The brand new factory is located on a 3 hectare plot in the center of the Niqel Jatropha estate. The incoming Jatropha fruits are turned into Jatropha bio-oil, green energy, Jathropha protein meal, organic pellets and organic fertilizer. More than 99% of the incoming material is turned into useful products. Our products incur little or no carbon debt and offer immediate and sustained GHG advantages.
The oil winning process, in summary, involves the reception of fresh harvested fruits from the plantations, automatic drying of the fruit, separation seeds from hulls and pressing out the crude oil. The crude oil is further treated to purify, dry and degum it for storage and transport. The technology for the oil winning process was developed in the Netherlands. Our Jatropha bio-oil presents a very promising alternative to diesel oil since it is renewable and has similar properties to the diesel. It can be used in conventional diesel engines without any engine modification, using a blend of 25% Jatropha bio-oil and 75% diesel.
Biodiesel Amsterdam produces second generation biodiesel according to the European EN14214 standard. Second generation biodiesel is made from used oils and fats. Biodiesel Amsterdam produces annually 125 million liters of high quality biodiesel that has a very positive impact on the environment and has a beneficial effect on the performance of the engine.
Biodiesel Amsterdam has made a comparison between greenhouse gas emissions over the entire life cycle from Jatropha Biodiesel and conventional diesel used in transport. The CO2 emissions of Jatropha Biodiesel are more than 70% lower than those of conventional diesel. Jatropha Biodiesel is one of the most promising alternative fuels for the transport sector.
